Author Interview

Vision, Values, and the Art of the Possible: A Conversation with Anil Bakshi

Author of "The Platform – Making India the Pharmacy of the World"

Q1: Anil, congratulations on the book. What inspired you to write The Platform?

Anil Bakshi: Thank you. The inspiration came from a real transformation journey I witnessed—where a struggling pharma company, with the right investor mindset and the catalytic support of government schemes, evolved into a global platform. I felt this story needed to be told—not as a dry case study, but as a compelling narrative that could inspire entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors alike. India's pharma sector is at a pivotal moment, and this book is my contribution to that conversation.

Q2: The book centers around Phoenix Molecules. Is it based on a real company?

Phoenix Molecules is a composite character—fictional, but deeply rooted in real experiences. It represents the journey of many Indian pharma companies that have faced adversity, embraced innovation, and emerged stronger. The name 'Phoenix' symbolizes rebirth through transformation. It's a metaphor for what's possible when vision, values, and execution align.

Q3: What makes India uniquely positioned to become the Pharmacy of the World?

India has three key advantages: scale, scientific talent, and a strong manufacturing base. But what's changing the game now is policy—initiatives like the PLI scheme, bulk drug parks, and R&D incentives. When these are combined with entrepreneurial energy and global investor interest, India becomes not just a supplier, but a platform for global health solutions.

Q4: You talk about "platform thinking" in the book. What does that mean in the pharma context?

Platform thinking is about solving problems at scale, not just selling products. It's about building ecosystems—where R&D, manufacturing, regulatory compliance, and market access are integrated to deliver value across the healthcare chain. Phoenix Molecules, in the book, evolves from a product-centric company to a problem-solving platform. That's the future of pharma.

Q5: What were some of the biggest challenges in writing this book?

Balancing storytelling with strategic insight. I didn't want it to be a dry business manual, nor a purely fictional tale. The challenge was to weave real-world lessons into a narrative that's engaging, accessible, and actionable. Also, distilling 30+ years of experience into a few chapters was no small task!

Q6: Who is this book for?

It's for:

  • Pharma entrepreneurs looking to scale globally
  • Policy makers shaping the future of healthcare
  • Investors seeking long-term value in life sciences
  • Educators and students exploring real-world transformation
  • Global pharma associations interested in India's evolving role

Q7: What's the one message you want readers to take away?

That transformation is possible—even in the most complex, regulated, and competitive industries. With the right alignment of purpose, policy, and partnerships, we can build platforms that serve humanity while creating sustainable value.

Q8: What's next after the launch at CPHI Frankfurt 2025?

We're planning a global engagement campaign—panel discussions, academic collaborations, and digital storytelling. The goal is to turn this book into a movement that inspires real change in how pharma platforms are built and scaled.

Q9: Any final thoughts for aspiring leaders in the pharma space?

Stay curious. Stay committed. And never underestimate the power of purpose. The future belongs to those who solve problems—not just sell products.
